Sheeting Guide

Engineer grade vs. high-intensity prismatic street signs

Two reflective grades, one question: how far away does a driver need to read your sign at night?

The short answer

Choose engineer grade for private drives, parking areas and low-speed roads, where approach speeds are low and reading distances are short. Choose high-intensity prismatic (HIP) for public streets, higher-speed approaches and any sign that sits well back from the road: it is roughly three times brighter, so drivers pick it out sooner. Both are printed on rust-proof aluminum and both are available on the signs we make, so the deciding question is how fast the traffic is and how much light the sign gets.

Where engineer grade is enough

Engineer grade is the entry-level reflective sheeting, built on glass beads. On a quiet residential loop, a farm lane or a company parking lot, vehicles move slowly and the reading distance is short, so it does the job and keeps the order sensible. We supply it on stop and regulatory signs for slow private areas and on parking and reserved signs, where engineer grade covers almost every lot.

Where high-intensity prismatic earns its place

HIP uses micro-prismatic optics to return far more light to the driver. On a through street, a collector or a road with heavy night traffic, a faster driver needs to read the sign from farther away to act on it, and the brighter grade buys that time. It is what we recommend for public streets and for street name blades. If you are choosing between two grades for a given street, the brighter one is almost always the cheaper mistake to make. For a deeper look at the standards behind this, read our guide to MUTCD reflectivity and sheeting grades.

The verdict

Pick engineer grade for private roads, estates, parking lots and any slow site where the sign is read up close.

Pick high-intensity prismatic for public streets, faster approaches, long sight lines and signs set back from the carriageway.
